About podiatry

Podiatrists are allied health professionals who specialise in the foot, ankle and leg healthcare, allowing them to improve patients’ mobility, independence and quality of life. The title podiatrist is protected by law and is internationally recognised and has replaced that of chiropodist which has only ever been used in the United Kingdom. They are fully qualified to check circulatory and neurological problems, manage wounds, remove toenails under local anaesthetic, supply some prescription only medication and carry out biomechanical assessments and issue orthotic (insoles) accordingly.

Podiatrists should not be confused with foot health practitioners (FHPs) which is an unprotected title that can be used by anyone regardless of how much training they have. Podiatrists have all completed a recognised course of studying involving at least 3 years rigorous training in one of the 13 UK universities to offer Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Podiatry and have completed a minimum of 1000 hours hands-on training in both NHS and private clinical settings. All podiatrists also required to complete ongoing CPD (continuous professional development) to keep skills and knowledge up to date and in line with evidence based practice.
